Day 13: McBride - Mount Robson 77km
Mount Robson - Jasper 88km

It was dry in the morning and there was even some sunshine! In a great mood I hopped on my bike and started this short day. At least, we thought it would be short and easy. We climbed lightly, but for quite a while, and biked through beautiful mountains with some white snow tops. Nice little mountains, but you could feel it was getting more serious and that the real Rockies would appear soon. The wind was fairly strong, but because dad and I religiously keep our 5km take over policy, it was manageable. We passed the crossing between highway 5 and highway 16, which for me highlighted the start of the Rockies: we were really in the Jasper area now. As a side note, Jasper is still 100km away, but it feels like the entrance to the Rockies. We passed the 1000km marker. We had biked already for 1000 kilometers on highway 16!! Lunch followed soon and there I uttered the idea to my dad to continue biking to Jasper. For today there were only 77km scheduled; the weather was nice or at least seemed fairly stable and in the afternoon it is much warmer than in the morning. There was a lot of rain predicted overnight for Mount Robson where our group would camp. We arrived at the campsite around 11:15am. Dad had gotten used to the idea and agreed to join me on this adventure. I packed my small backpack with absolute essentials. We were supposed to sign a waiver that we would leave the tour for a day but we were so fast that Max didn't have enough time to write one and we forgot about it. While we were about to leave, Mike arrived with his backpack and told us he'd join. After booking a hotel room at the information/visitor center, the three of us took off for another 88km to Jasper. The ride was beautiful, along lakes and between mountains. We stopped after 50k to have a second lunch and just when we were about to leave, a truck pulled up next to us. The guy asked us if we were aware that only 200 meters away from us, on the highway, three grizzly bears were also having their lunch. A little scared, we got on our bikes, but there were a few cars and people outside of their cars taking pictures. The three bears were at a decent distance so against my plan not to stop for grizzly bears, I stopped and took a picture. I took the pic so fast that the bear looks more like a bison, but it's still nice to have some proof.

We continued our journey; only 35km left. The rest of the ride was fairly easy and we arrived a little after 5pm, with a feeling of triumph, in Jasper. The most important part of the trip for me is the ride between Jasper and Banff and unless it absolutely pouring rain (or snow), I want to ride all of it. We checked in in the hotel; the same hotel TDA had booked for us for the rest day, and had a nice meal. Then, we all fell asleep around 8 or 9pm because we were absolutely exhausted.
